Gum treatment. Gingivitis and Periodontitis
Gingivitis and periodontitis are two types of periodontal diseases (gum disease). They affect a large part of the population. They both involve inflammation of the gums and tissue that surround the teeth. This may occur without any damage to the bone (gingivitis) or with damage to the bone to which the teeth are attached (periodontitis). If the process is not stopped, it can lead to the loss of teeth
These diseases are caused by the accumulation of plaque bacteria and tartar below the gums. Poor dental hygiene, hormonal changes, tobacco, certain systemic diseases or poorly aligned teeth are all factors that can predispose the appearance of gingivitis and periodontitis.
Conventional treatment consists of eliminating the deposits of tartar and plaque. However, this may not be enough to adequately control the disease, especially if the procedures are carried out by less-than-expert or hasty hands.
At Clínica Dental Padrós we ensure that the most suitable treatment is used in each case. As well as thoroughly cleaning teeth and carefully eliminating all accumulations of tartar and plaque, it is often a good idea to grow cultures of the bacteria which cause the gingivitis or periodontitis. With this information we can treat each case according to its individual needs, perform antibacterial irrigations, polish the enamel, avoid conditions which worsen the problem (poorly aligned teeth, food impacted between teeth, etc.).
Finally, the new union between the gum and the tooth needs to be stimulated to achieve a good seal and prevent the re-appearance of gingivitis. This should all be managed using probes and periodontograms which measure the seal quality of the gums around the teeth.
